We all have heard stories of supervisors and bosses turning into the worst nightmares of employees. While there is an element of truth in some of these stories, it’s just a part of the bigger picture, not the picture itself. Supervisor is a general term used to refer to a person immediately superior to someone in the organization.  By superior we are talking in terms of the reporting hierarchy. For example, an executive’s supervisor will be the team leader while a team leader’s supervisor will be the manager i.e the person whom he directly reports to in the company. While being selected for a supervisor job is undoubtedly a matter of pride and delight, often the experience that follows the selection is not as smooth a ride as it first seems. Handling a team of individuals, where every person has his/her own way of thinking and natural characteristics, is certainly not an easy task. But as they say, with great power comes great responsibility and to handle that responsibility one must equip himself with the required skills beforehand to avoid any issues later on.

Start Slowly

You have been waiting for this opportunity to show the world that you can lead and now when the time as arrived you are going all out, pulling out all the stops to get the work done. However, this kind of over-enthusiasm will cause more harm than good. Take your time to acclimatize to the new environment, and give your team members the required time to get familiar with your style of working. Reassure them that it will be a business as usual and slowly incorporate required improvements.

Seek a mentor

A job for supervisor can be best understood by a person who has previously worked in that capacity. In order to understand the nuances of working as a supervisor you can turn up to your immediate boss or someone senior with whom you are comfortable sharing your issues.  While this solution applies very well to IT companies, those who work in offsite locations like dams, construction sites i.e maintenance supervisors do not have this luxury. For them, it is advisable to seek a mentor through professional networking.

Be fair and consistent

This is the most basic requirement of being a good supervisor. No matter what, you need to be fair and even-handed in your decisions. Since it is your team, you ought to have a fair idea about the strengths and weaknesses of the team members. Judge accordingly. Keep sycophants and beavers at an arm’s length.

Promote Team work   

One mistake many candidates working in a job of supervisor commit is dividing the team on the basis of different work the members do. Such a practice promotes distrust and factionalism within the team, which by no means is a good thing for productivity.  Make sure to maintain a connect within the team through different team activities even if the work has to be separately assigned. More importantly, keep a two-way communication and do not get too carried away in an attempt to establish your authority.
